Eye Makeup Safety Tips

You’re eyes are the windows to your soul, be sure to protect them!

Eye makeup such as eye shadow, eyeliner, mascara are generally safe, as long as you use them correctly. Since your eyes are the most sensitive part of your face, you should take extra precaution when you using eye makeup.

Eye makeup can accumulate bacteria and fungi over time. If you don’t clean them well and replace them when needed the bacteria and fungi can multiply and may irritate your eyes. Look good without compromising your health, these are very important eye makeup safety tips: dos and don’ts of eye makeups that you should remember.

Buy new make-up every six months.

I know makeup can get expensive, but it’s better to be safe than sorry when it comes to protecting your eyes. At a minimum, you should replace your eye makeup every 6 months, specially if you wear contact lenses. Don’t use mascara that’s dried out. It’s best to replace mascara every three to four months or sooner if it’s dried. Don’t attempt to moisten it by adding some liquid that may cause irritation.

Never share makeup with friends.

Share your secrets, hopes and dreams with your friends but not makeup! Dermatologists advise, you should never share your makeup with anyone. Makeup, especially mascara products are personal items and shouldn’t be shared.

Always wash hands before applying make-up

It’s important that your hands are clean before applying your makeup. Even if you have good makeup brushes, sometimes you really need to use your finger tips to blend your makeup well or to remove excess product. And as you know your hands contain germs so to avoid these germs to spread around your face, make sure your hands are clean.

Never apply makeup while you are in a moving vehicle.

You’re late for work and you can only do you makeup in the car or during commute, this happens to most of us, but doing this isn’t safe. You probably master the art of applying makeup in a moving vehicle, but you should avoid this because you never know, you might accidentally poke your eyes one day! Ouch!

Keep eye cosmetics cool, at 85° F or below

Avoid leaving your makeup in the car or in any room with high temperature.

Don’t mix and match cosmetics.

Use what’s intended for your eyes on your eyes only. Sometimes we use the one specific product on different parts of our face, so don’t use the same pencil for both lips and eyes, or your lipstick as your eye shadow, as that can introduce bacteria.
